Microsoft Edge Update causing abrupt closure of Working Papers

It has come to our attention that the latest Microsoft Edge WebView2 patch, released on January 25th 2024, may cause versions Working Papers 2022 and above to close abruptly. This is impacting users who use Working Papers integrated with Caseware Cloud to enable SmartSync or Submissions. The screenshot below highlights  the specific version that introduced the issue.

While the Caseware team investigates a permanent solution, we have prioritised providing an interim solution that is easy to deploy for all affected organisations.

Caseware has created an installer that performs the following actions:

  • Installs the previous working version of Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime within the Working Papers installation folder - Updates the Working Papers configuration files to use this previous version (note that other applications that utilise Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime are not impacted by this change).

Execute the installer by following these simple steps:

1. Click here to download the installer.

2. Close all Working Papers and Caseview windows.

3. Double-click the installation executable and select Next.

4. Accept the License Agreement and select Next to review the installation folder (normally C:\Program Files (x86)\Caseware). The installer detects the latest version of Working Papers on the computer and gives you the option to change the location to a previous version's folder (if multiple versions of Working Papers are installed).

5. Select Install and wait for the process to finish. Select Finish to close the installer.

6. Add the following line to the CV.VER file: UseEdgeBrowserFixedRuntime=1

Click here for guidance on editing the CV.VER.

The installer can also be deployed through Device Management tools. Click here for further guidance.
