Why does my TB balance in Excel but not in Caseware?

The most likely cause of this would be down to duplicate account numbers in Excel. Caseware will only allow unique account numbers. If a trial balance has duplicated account numbers, Caseware will ignore them upon importing and this will result in the working trial balance being out-of-balance.

To fix the problem:

1. Identify the difference between the Caseware Working TB and the Excel TB. This will be used to find the duplicate account number.

2. Open the Excel file which contains the client's trial balance.

3. Using the out-of-balance amount from Caseware, locate the duplicate account.

4. Re-number the duplicate account and make a note for next year, to prevent a recurring issue.

 

NOTE: Either re-import the trial balance or manually add the re-numbered account in the Caseware Trial Balance screen.
